Kotor is an old port and trading town at the southeastern end of the bay of the same name. The town itself has only a few thousand inhabitants; together with the surrounding villages, the municipality has a total of about 24,000 inhabitants. Kotor was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1979, but most of the buildings have been restored.

The Kotor City Walls - Kotor Fortress Trail starts in the Old Town of Kotor and ascends 1350 steps along Kotor's fortifications to the hilltop Kotor Fortress (aka San Giovanni Fortress and St. John Fortress). The St. John's Fortress is a multi-level ruin, located at 260 meters above sea level.

The hike to St John's Fortress consists of 1350-odd stone steps and takes about 2 to 2.5 hours (up and down). Since we visited Kotor in the month of July, it was hot and sunny as one would expect in the peak summer. Despite his protests, I managed to convince Mr AW that starting the Kotor fortress hike early morning is the best way to beat.

The Kotor Fortress is part of a medieval fortification system that encircles the Kotor Old Town as well as the adjacent hillside. These fortifications consist of gates, bastions, towers, and defensive walls (ramparts). Starting in the Old Town of Kotor, it takes 45 minutes to 1 hour to walk up the 1350 steps to the hilltop Kotor Fortress.

How to Hike to Kotor Fortress for FREE

Finding the start of the trail. To find the start of the Ladder of Cattaro hiking trail up to Kotor fortress you need to exit Kotor's city walls first. if you exit through the main front entrance, turn right and walk down the main road, cross the river and take the first right into the road with the big shopping mall.
